Impact:

The aim of this project is to support the economic participation of women and youth, promote equality and improve the welfare of the beneficiaries.

Why is this project important?

Uganda is burdened by extreme poverty and faces significant challenges as it tries to meet the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).

Microfinance is proven to be an effective and efficient means to combat poverty. However, in Ugandaless than 3 million people are currently benefiting from microcredit. Many more people could benefit from this help and therefore it is important to expand microfinance programs in the country.

How does the CML’s microfinance project work?

We believe that our community challenges need special attention and our products are tailored to creatively meet these needs. CML has designed an In-Kind Youth Loan product that meets the needs of the young entrepreneurs. CML is using a strategy that goes beyond collateral to give community members an opportunity to have access to capital and tools to use in their businesses. In Africa and other developing countries having no access to capital is ranked number two among the most pressing needs for businesses.

Many financial institutions do not mind the fact that entrepreneurs need to be helped in idea generation. Through our mentoring program we encourage young entrepreneurs on their journey to their dream enterprises by attaching them to community members that have weathered though the storms of setting up and running businesses.

Vision:-To be the preferred world-class microfinance institution in Uganda

Mission:-To provide efficient, affordable, innovative and sustainable, customer-focused financial services to the underserved communities in Uganda.

CML GROUP LOAN

Community microfinance provides loans to groups of 5-20 women, youth and men. Each member in the group has his/her business idea appraised and receives five training sessions covering topics such as, group dynamism, simple book keeping, loan management, business plan, and cash flow management. These training sessions take place in the community at a designated place of convenience to all members or at the branch for those that stay close to our offices. All group members are required to save money before they take the loan.

Groups meet with a credit officer at least once every month to review their progress. Repayments against loans are made weekly, bi weekly and monthly by each group member. In cases where things are not going well the group through its committee informs the credit officer who convenes a meeting to resolve the problem.

SMALL BUSINESS LOAN (SBL)

This product targets Individual Entrepreneurs who have been in business for more than one year and are seeking for capital to boost their business.

IN-KIND LOAN

The conventional microfinance institutions normally give loans in form of cash but this comes with its own problems. CML has designed an in-kind loan product as a test to minimizing any undesirable consequences that arise as result of giving cash especially to the young entrepreneurs. This product mainly targets the young entrepreneurs that have little or no experience of using borrowed funds. We mainly help our clients acquire business assets such as motorcycles, solar, carpentry tools, fridge, acquiring driving licenses, and any other business related assets.

COMMUNITY MICROFINANCE YOUTH ENTREPRENEURSHIP PROGRAM

Community Microfinance Youth Entrepreneurship Program (CMYEP) provides a unique experience for youth to take an idea of their own and turn it into an actual business that serves their community and also helps them have a livelihood. About 80% of the youth in Uganda aged 35 are unemployed but this does not mean that they cannot engage in meaningful production given an opportunity and those that have started businesses do not cerebrate their first birthday. Our programming is built around the idea that youth shouldn’t just learn the concept of entrepreneurship -they should get the chance to put it into practice.

Our program provides youth with the opportunity to engage in entrepreneurial efforts within their community to create an economically self-sustaining community. Youth learn how to capture a market share of their “micro-economy” (i.e. the money that circulates in their environment), and they get to determine how to use the profits from their businesses for re-investment and taking care of their everyday needs like health feeding, and school fees.

SOLAR LOAN

We have over the years realized that many of our clients in the rural area face several challenges notably the lack of access to electricity or other forms of power.About 20% of rural household budgets go to paraffin, wax candles, and dry cells. This represents a million dollar business, but it does not empower Uganda: the goods are imported, and the money leaves the country. The country’s paraffin consumption for lighting alone is 1.7 million barrels of oil per day, greater than the oil production of Libya.

Our solar products help the community members live a better life.

Volunteer Accommodation:The accommodation is a volunteer house detached from the hosting family. The volunteers will stay in the same complex with the hosting family. The distance to the office is about half a kilometer and it is a walkable distance that takes about 10 minutes.

Language Requirement: English

Sex: Both, Age: 21+

Typical Volunteer Hours: Typically volunteers have an average 5-8a day, 5 days a week. Volunteers may be needed evenings and weekends. You can take long weekends to travel and explore Uganda, just let your supervisor know in advance. We know that you are volunteering your valuable time. Therefore, if you would like to volunteer for fewer hours, this is ok. You can arrange this with your supervisor once in Uganda.

Duration: 1 month +

When: Year Round

Asset Skills: Excellent knowledge of accounting and business, especially social entrepreneurship and other skills in finance.

Or do you just want to tell the world about your organization and projects?

Get on HDV Volunteer database, display your projects and volunteering opportunities, and get people to visit your project and web-site and support your organization and get volunteers coming to help you directly!

Hope Development Volunteers- Tel: +256-757-389926 or E-mail: hdvpartners@gmail.com is a registered Development NGO and volunteer-referring organization that believes in ‘Development through Volunteerism’. We recruit and train volunteers for African volunteer work placements in a number of partner Projects. We also fundraise, manage and implement local development and human rights initiatives within these partner projects and help volunteers and donors who wish to contribute to these projects using their time, skills and/or money.

Why should you engage volunteers?

Maybe you’re not sold on the merits of volunteers, at least for your organization. “Volunteers are too much trouble,” you might think; “they’re not reliable; it takes too long to train them, and once you do, they just leave. Also, we’re liable for their actions–that’s a problem that we just don’t need right now. It’s easier to do our work with paid staff.”

Despite these challenges, however, consider some of the different advantages of using volunteers as part of a thoughtfully developed plan.

Volunteers bring money- All the volunteers we send to organization are self supporting and actually do separate fundraising for our partner projects as a direct contribution towards the cause.

Volunteers save money. This obvious advantage of volunteers can be a lifesaver for some organizations. Many organizations, function almost entirely on volunteer labor–and by doing so, they can to do a lot of very good work without a lot of money.

Volunteers bring needed skills. Many volunteers have specialized knowledge such as computer programming, advertising, or conflict mediation that your organization occasionally needs, but not often enough to hire someone to do the work full-time. A volunteer who donates his or her skills on an “as-needed” basis can be the perfect complement to your office staff.

Volunteers bring renewed energy and excitement. Even the most dedicated people can get burnt out working on the same thing when they are doing it 40 (or more) hours a week. Volunteers can bring a fresh perspective and enthusiasm for the work. This can help revitalize staff, and may help move projects in exciting new directions.

So if you need energetic, creative, developmental volunteers for a project or distinct chunk of work (work-camp) within your organization…

We specialize in helping non-profit organizations find volunteers for projects in Africa. Whether you need 2 volunteers or 20 volunteers, we’re here to help.

Environment Conservation

Here are some things we’ve done already:

1- Our volunteers have constructed and equipped community health centers at the direction of our local partner NGOs.

2- Our volunteers have built schools and equipped them to support orphans and disadvantaged children attending to them.

3- Groups ranging between 10-20 volunteers have worked on various work camps organized by our local partner NGOs to build schools, health centers, water-sources and orphanages.

4- Our volunteers have participated in various community outreaches tend to improve the living standards of the local communities.

Our only criteria for volunteer work are:

That the work has a tangible result (e.g. volunteers can see the 100 trees they’ve planted, or volunteers get to interact directly with the beneficiaries of your organization (e.g. play games with children you serve). This means that we can’t help you with fundraising or marketing unless it also ticks one of the above requirements.

The project must be able to be completed within about one week to 3 months (or if it’s a massive project you might like to break it into a series of weekly projects).

Once you’ve given us all the details of the volunteer program, we’ll review everything, potentially ask some clarifying questions and soon an enthusiastic and organized group of volunteers will appear on your doorstep.

If the volunteers have a good time there is always the potential for them to come back again on their own and become regular volunteers with your organization. We’re actually building ways of making this happen more.

Please note that our volunteers won’t necessarily have any specialist skills, so if you need them to do anything a bit complicated (ie: plant a tree the right way), please make sure you have someone on hand to guide them through any possible difficulties.

We do charge a small fee for this service, which goes towards keeping the marketing of your volunteer program, orienting volunteers, and other operational costs.

It’s quite small annual fee

Through Beacon of Hope Uganda’s Reach & Teach programs in rural village in Uganda, you can get involved with a complete range of teaching and development activities. You can help in taking normal classes, assisting the teaching staff, conducting extracurricular activities like clay modeling, painting, drawing, singing, art & drama, dancing, group work, games or other similar activities. Your help and assistance will be greatly appreciated in this rural school and will be a refreshing change to existing curriculum. This school was carefully selected by volunteers as it deserves a long term planned development program. The school is located in a rural community and has limited resources, both infrastructure and staff.

Volunteers can take up projects depending on the needs of the school. Almost all schools we support have need for infrastructure development and/or renovations. Volunteers can do a combination of both teaching and renovation/building work at the project they choose to work at. If you’re a native English speaker or with some teaching experience, you can be a valuable resource in these village classrooms. With your English skills you could teach proper English pronunciation and usage. Even if you’ve never formally taught a classroom subject, you can assist the local teachers in their day to day work at the school. You don’t need to know the local language, or the methods of the local school system. All you need is enthusiasm and a desire to share your knowledge and make a difference.

Unfortunately you would like to work with the Teaching placement, teaching computers, but unfortunately the school does not have computers, but sometimes volunteers help by using their own laptops to help the students in groups of 3-5 students per group.

CARING FOR ORPHANS / AT CHILDRENS HOME

The project runs orphanage/children’s home in Uganda. With limited staff, resources and facilities, we are struggling to provide care, love and support to orphaned children. Being hugely understaffed, we have few learning or extra-curricular activities. Beacon of Hope Uganda through its domestic and international volunteers is able to provide the orphanage with support and help. These could be in the form of improving the existing facilities, assisting the staff, teaching and helping with the general running and administration of the orphanage/children’s home. Volunteers usually help in refurbishing existing buildings, improving facilities, teaching Basic English, drawing, drama, conducting games etc.

At this orphanage and children’s home you are typically greeted with big hugs, toothless smiles and children curious to touch and get your attention. These children are here due to poverty, disabilities, and homelessness and also as the only way to attend school. Through Beacon of Hope Uganda caring for orphans and children’s home programs you can make a lasting difference in these young lives. You can care for children in many ways. Often no special skills are required, as volunteers are needed to spend time playing, reading, exercising and share time with the children. Since the host project is short-staffed and the volunteers’ attention gives the children the extra love they need.

The need is expansive and long-term, so your opportunity to make a significant difference through service is likewise immeasurable. You can help expand and maintain residential training and daycare facilities or help host staff conduct recreational activities, teach classes and serve meals. If you have first-hand experience working with children with disabilities, professionally or personally, your expertise can be especially useful in this project. You can also provide direct services to deaf or mentally challenged children. No matter what your age, background, gender or ability, you can be a valuable resource to demonstrate the universal language of love, compassion and make a difference to the children’s’ lives!

Placement duration is a minimum of 4-8 weeks.

Placement Location: Uganda

Placement Booking Fee: USD$ 100 (Paid Upon acceptance in the Program)

Airport Pickup: USD$75

Placement Fee: USD$350 per month (Covering 3 meals a day, Accommodation, Water and Ground Support)

Does your school Need International Volunteers? Or you are looking for a sister school for your school in Europe, North America & Australia?

If one of those situations describes your school, you’re sure to gain from the work of Hope Development Volunteers where we help schools in Uganda and Kenya to recruit volunteers and also help link them with partner (sister) schools in Europe, Australia and North America.

We can send any number of volunteers to school project ranging from 1-30 volunteers and volunteers do a variety of activities from teaching classes, working with children and construction work as well administration tasks like fundraising.

The value that volunteers provide is undeniable, they not only provide tremendous support and assistance, and they reinforce the partnership you may be working hard to develop.

International Volunteers can help in many ways to support teachers and improve academic programs at your school. Volunteers can benefit a school in concrete ways and in ways that are not quite so obvious. For example and international volunteer can help work as Public Relations agent for your school, they can help build enthusiasm in the community for what’s going on in your school.

The volunteers we refer to your school can help you spread the word to the rest of the world.

So if you feel your school (Nursery, Primary or Secondary) can benefit from the volunteers referred by Hope Development Volunteers this year, please email us, organize to meet us or call us on: hdvpartners@gmail.com and +256-757-389926

Are you looking to do something more meaningful on your travels? Beacon of Hope Uganda recruits volunteers for locally-run community, conservation, teaching, building and sports projects around Uganda. Volunteers are an integral part of everything that happens at Beacon of Hope Uganda. We couldn’t do it without them. There are many ways to volunteer your time, as well as your skills, to help out. Depending on the season, we always have a list of much needed services of volunteers within our projects around Uganda.

Who can volunteer? Adults of both sexes 18+ and with appropriate skills

Commitment: 1 week minimum

Our Volunteer Program is an immersion program customized for individual travelers, students, professionals, families, groups, or anyone with the desire to serve in rural villages in Uganda. The timetable you travel, your village destination, and the projects you may be involved with are all geared to your skills and interests, and the villages’ needs.

The program is collaboration between Beacon of Hope Uganda and the under-served rural villages of Mukono District where we serve. We are committed to meeting the needs of our communities, and to placing developmental volunteers in worthy programs that provide safe and meaningful experiences.

If you are interested in participating in our program, write to us and we will work with you to identify your best placement options in Mukono. You have to confirm your coming with a commitment of USD$ 100 by booking a placement.

Because it is an immersion experience, days in the villages allow for a variety of opportunities. And whether you work in a clinic, school, or orphan home, participate in building or agricultural projects, or simply assist in the day-to-day tasks.

Beacon of Hope Uganda works closely with each volunteer to ensure comprehensive preparation, including both an understanding of the people with whom you will be working, and all considerations necessary for travel overseas.

Are you interested in being a Beacon of Hope Uganda volunteer, but would like more information? Contact our team and let us know what your hopes are for your volunteer experience, and we will assist you in planning a meaningful and fulfilling journey.
